NADS E-Newsletter - November 2008

NADS in the Community

As well as focusing on improving facilities and services for disabled spectators, a part of NADS wider remit is to raise disability awareness. We were delighted to launch a pilot project on 31 October in conjunction with Everton in the Community and Kick It Out.

The project aims to bring disabled and non-disabled children into football clubs and get them thinking about the issues/barriers disabled people face in their day to day activities and at football grounds. We were pleased that Danny Wallace (NADS Ambassador) was also present to answer the children's questions and hear more about being a professional footballer and how he is dealing with having Multiple Sclerosis. Steve Johnson (England Amputee captain) and head of the Everton in the Community scheme also took part explaining the great work they are doing with disabled footballers.

The event, held at the recently refurbished Extra Time - Everton Study Centre, was a great success with around 20 children looking at some of the access needs for disabled people. The children took photos showing examples of barriers and solutions and learnt some basic sign language for the deaf. They also learnt about some of the different types of visual impairment and listened to special audio described commentary for blind and visually impaired fans before having a go themselves.

We are now planning further events around the country along with our friends at Kick it Out. If you'd like to know more or talk to us about holding an event at your club, please contact us on 0845 230 6237 or email info@nads.org.uk.

Norwich City Disability Awareness Week

Last week saw Norwich City Football Club, in conjunction with main sponsor Aviva, hold its fourth Disability Awareness Week.

The aim of the initiative was to highlight the wide range of facilities and services for supporters at Carrow Road as well as the opportunities to participate in a variety of sporting activities through the Ability Counts programme run by Football in the Community. Activities commenced on Wednesday, November 12 with a disabled supporters forum at Carrow Road. This was a ticketed event giving disabled fans the opportunity to ask their questions to a Norwich City panel including Club Chairman Roger Munby and City player Adam Drury. Paralympian and Aviva employee Danny Nobbs was also on the panel as a special guest to share his experiences of the Beijing Paralympics. Key customer service staff were also on hand to answer queries about disabled matchday access and how to get involved in football with the Ability Counts scheme.

NADS were delighted to have been invited to this event and to help publicise the fantastic work being done by the club - for more information, click

"Hate Crimes"

NADS have recently been made aware that a Scottish footballer suffered abuse because of his disability as he left the pitch. As Dean Shiels walked towards the tunnel at the end of a scoreless draw, he was abused by a group of St Mirren supporters over his visual impairment, the Hibernian striker having an eye removed three years ago after losing the sight in it as a youngster.

NADS have also seen an increasing amount of abuse aimed at disabled fans, often specific to their disability and we fully understand the difficulties and sensitivity of reporting such abuse.

Some of you have shared these dreadful incidents with us and please be assured that we will continue to lend a confidential ear. What is evident is that most of these incidents occur where disabled away fans have to sit among the home fans and we will continue to lobby for changes to facilities.

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission and the various football authorities are keen to put a stop to this (see this
link from the EHRC) and there is a confidential helpline run by the FA you can use to report any abuse.

To report incidents of abuse and discrimination please call this number:

*If you are calling from a mobile telephone, you may be charged for this call.

NADS Website - Fan's Comments

The NADS website now has a section for each club where you can add your own comments/photo's - if you experience anything good or bad, please share your experiences with your fellow supporters. You'll find the 'Fan's Comments' box within each individual club menu.

It has recently come to our attention that not all clubs are requesting, taking up or offering their full allocation of disabled away tickets.

We also know that some clubs are able, on occasion, to allocate additional tickets and we suggest that if you find yourself unable to get a ticket, your first step should be to ask your club to request extra tickets from the home club if available.

Please let NADS know if you cannot go to a match because all the disabled area tickets have been sold.

FA Research

The FA are looking for members of the football community to become involved in an important piece of research concerning the inclusion of amputee footballers in mainstream and non amputee specific football competitions.

As you may or may not be aware amputee football is traditionally played without prosthesis and on elbow crutches for outfield players whilst goalkeepers are single arm amputees. Currently the FA laws of the game only allow amputee footballers to participate in amputee specific or pan disability football competitions whilst using crutches.

Football takes many different forms and The FA are committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be actively involved in football in a safe, positive, high quality environment where they are given the appropriate support to be the best they can.

In light of this the FA Disability Equality Advisory Group has developed a risk assessment framework to determine whether there are any health and safety implications with amputee footballers participating in the different formats of football with both non disabled and non amputee specific disabled footballers.

The FA has commissioned Logistique to critique, a sports management consultancy firm to test and consult on the Risk Assessment Framework by:

  • Checking that the risk assessment processes are sufficiently detailed and robust.
  • Undertaking testing of the framework to ascertain its appropriateness ensuring the scope of this and the numbers of trials to be sufficiently robust to allow recommendations to be made back to DEAG and FA Board.
  • Seek the views of the disabled and mainstream football communities on the possible introduction of a rule allowing amputee footballers (using crutches) to participate in conventional football.

If you would like to input into this piece of research and offer your views or would like some further information please e-mail phil.heap@logistique.org.uk
